4.4 - What You Need

To Pearl’s surprise, her grandfather’s training had no sparkles or whistles attached. Her mother’s abilities are more physical than spectacular so Neptune taught her only the basics before turning her training over to Dorian. And he’s a harder trainer than those parents with kids in the Olympics!

But she still appreciates the training. She’s learned by now that the punch she gave Kitten was a lucky shot fueled by her anger, but if she can learn to harness her strength enough to use it whenever she needs? She’ll definitely be able to protect her family this way.

The toddlers are no trouble.

They twins in particular are honestly quite happy to be alone and entertain themselves.

Only Nicolas seems unwilling to ever be alone. He has his own room and seems alright with sleeping alone, but as soon as he’s awake the crying and wailing begins until someone he recognizes picks him up and stays with him.

With such well behaved children Pearl decides to bring up the idea of maybe having her own.
“I mean we’re at a good age, we’re engaged, we have plenty of space in the house, and my dad isn’t going anywhere any time soon, y’know? I want us to have a baby!”

Walt chokes on his pie.

“Well, I mean, shouldn’t we maybe... uh... wait until Nicolas and the twins are a little older? They need our attention and I don’t want them feeling unloved or something, right?”

But as they sleep, his mind is quickly changed.

And the entire time Pearl is at work, Walt just gets more and more excited. Pearl’s right. Now is the perfect time for children, and its about time Nicolas had some younger siblings, not just a younger aunt and uncle.

Pearl arrives home a little late, but happy to announce a new promotion to traffic cop. She’s no where near where she wants to be, but its a step in the right direction.

Walt’s there to cheer her up with a surprise hug.

And a surprise announcement.
“I want us to get married.” He smiles. “Right here, right now. And then I want us to get started on that family.”

“Right... here?” Pearl was planning a huge party. With bells, ribbons, a giant and extravagant ceremony and Coral being her sweet little flower girl!

But the only thing that really matters is the identity of her groom, she supposes.

So she agrees to Walt’s private wedding.

And the feeling is exactly what she imagined it would be, even without the eyes of her friends and family on her. She wanted a big marriage, but all she really needs is a guy who won’t run from her strange family. And that’s exactly what she has.

They get started on that baby making right away.

The following morning Nicolas becomes a child.

And Pearl learns her and Walt’s first attempts at a child were very successful.

More excitement next chapter. Promise!

You might not want that excitement though. Just saying.

4.3 - Cruel Times

Normally, the birth of a new child is cause for celebration in the Sari household.

But for Coral -

And her twin brother Reed,

The death of their mother sort of over shadows the joy of their birth.

There’d been no signs during River’s pregnancy, and her death came as a shock even to the doctors. But River’s heart had stopped sometime between Dorian finding her on the floor, and the birth of the second twin. It was a miracle both babies had been born healthy, but Dorian couldn’t even accept that blessing.

“How am I supposed to raise twins at my age?”
“You don’t have to worry dad, Walt and I will be here to help. You know that.”
If anything her words just make him feel worse. “But that’s just it. You shouldn’t have to stay and watch over your siblings. You and Walt should be off starting your own lives together free of burdens.”
Pearl just wishes her dad could understand that she doesn’t consider her nephew and siblings as burdens.

And it helps that Walt is so close to his soon-to-be little brother and sister in law.

Kitten becomes a young adult.

And so does Nile.

Unlike Pearl, neither want to stay home to help their father raise their new siblings. He may have lost a wife, but they lost their mother, and both would much rather move out and start a new life together in their own home.

Honestly, Dorian is glad the younger twins wanted to live their own lives. If River were still here with him, Pearl could have been just as free.

But River is long gone, and when Dorian starts feeling older he’s thankful Pearl and Walt are still here to help him with the twins.

Who become toddlers the same day their father goes grey. They both inherit Dorian’s light brown eyes, but only Reed inherits Dorian’s blue tipped hair. Just as Coral is the only one to inherit their mother’s hair.

Due to a water leak at City Hall, Pearl and Walt’s graduation ceremony was postponed, but at least with the new date all three of the toddlers can tag along without need for a babysitter.

Had Dorian’s abilities not faded so much with his age he might have sensed trouble the moment they left the graduation ceremony.

Perhaps leaving the children at home with a babysitter would have been a good idea.

After all, you never know who might be watching...

Normally, the leader refuses an audience when in his private rooms. But this human spy has an interesting story to tell.

“Curious.” He mutters with a smirk. “I fear how awful a father I must be if I didn’t even notice my daughter had a child.”
“I kept an eye on the thief’s family like you asked, and the baby in their care looks just like you, sir. There is no doubt unless she somehow escaped your harem.”
“I wouldn’t have that family in my harem for all the gold in the world.”

“Then what are your orders?”
His smile fades. “Kill them all. But bring the boy to me. In the meantime I must speak with my dear daughter.”

4.2 - Best Laid Plans

Some say it takes a village to raise a child. Pearl doesn’t necessarily believe that, but it does warm her heart to see everyone pitching in to raise little Nicolas. Walt especially seems to have taken a liking to the little vampire and treats him like a son.

Kitten too has taken a liking to the little boy, which was quite the shock to her parents. No one expected her to ever have kids but suddenly her mind has completely changed!
... Maybe she’ll adopt or something. Being pregnant would interfere with her career.

River has been getting bigger with every passing minute, and absolutely refuses to listen to the doctor’s orders to stay in bed. She honestly tried to be good but then a half hour passed by and she got restless.

Dorian usually manages to chase her back into bed but today he’s out selling a few of his art pieces and the kids have learned to just ignore their mom when she’s being stubborn.

Surprisingly enough, Walt was the only one to put up an argument when Pearl expressed interest in going into law enforcement. River was already considering retirement after the baby was born, and Dorian gave his blessing easily enough.
Truth be told they’re both just hoping being a police officer gets Pearl some extra protection.

Whenever Nicolas isn’t specifically in Pearl’s arms he can be found with Walt.

He and Pearl never really talked about having a family, but seeing how good he is with her nephew warms Pearl’s heart.

So when Walt invites her out for dinner at the Bistro she agrees, ignoring the fact that he can’t seem to look her in the eye today.

As the date wears on, Walt slowly becomes more relaxed, but remains twitchy and distracted. Pearl finds it sort of adorable.

She kisses him, telling him to relax. Her nephew is a vampire, not her. She isn’t going to bite him. At least... not hard (And even then, not in public!).

That seems to give him enough confidence to do what he’s been planning.
“I know you aren’t a vampire, silly. But helping you with your nephew has made me realize that I really want a family, and with you.”

“So... will you marry me?”
It wasn’t quite the proposal Pearl was hoping for (In her dreams he was on an elephant and there were fireworks) but it still makes her heart soar and her whole body go fuzzy with happiness.

She smiles so big, jumping up and down like a little girl. It makes Walt break out in laughter himself, barely able to grab her hand to slip the engagement ring on.

For these two, life is looking up.

But for one other... life takes the opposite direction. River wakes up in the middle of the night in pain, as if she’s going into labour but not that painful.

She gets out of bed to wake up Dorian but then the dizziness hits. She’s unconscious before she even hits the ground.

I could have moved River and Dorian out... I could have moved Pearl and Walt out... I could have done a lot of stuff but instead I went this route. : )

And I'm glad I did cause SP threw me one last curveball for next chapter.
